Very romantic
By Suze Lavender
Jessie tries to work as much as she can by cleaning and singing in nightclubs. She can’t keep the money she makes for herself though as she needs to pay off old debts. When Silvio discovers what she’s doing he takes her away and forbids Jessie to return to her apartment. Silvio was important to Jessie in the past, but he disappeared and they didn’t keep in touch. He wants her to have a better life and he can afford it, but Jessie doesn’t want him to make decisions about her future. She can’t take much more after everything she had to endure plus she isn’t part of his new luxurious lifestyle. Will she be able to prevent her heart from being broken again?

Bought: Destitute yet Defiant is a wonderful romantic story. Silvio is a powerful and wealthy man. He’s got a reputation in a lot of different circles. Before he found her by accident he had no idea about Jessie’s situation and now that he’s seen what she has to do to survive he wants to help. What he offers her comes with a price though. He’s a kind man, but he’s also used to getting his way. Jessie is a fighter and she values her independence. If she’d rely on Silvio she’d have to give part of that up and she doesn’t know if she’s willing to do that. They keep playing a dangerous game and there’s a lot at stake. It was interesting to watch and I couldn’t wait to find out how it would end.

I love Sarah Morgan’s stories. They’re always about fascinating and talented people. Bought: Destitute yet Defiant is a great modern fairytale. I was enchanted from the start and loved the chemistry between the main characters. Jessie and Silvio are perfect for one another. I liked this story very much, it’s a quick read with a lovely ending. It’s a typical Sarah Morgan book, which means it’s charming, dreamy and really sweet.

Lovely reunion story with hero rescuing his heroine
By Fiona
Another good fast read from Sarah Morgan. Jessie and Silvio have history, dating back to her childhood in the slums of London. Jessie and her brother lost their parents and ended up in care and Silvio became her brothers friend.

Silvio managed to escape the poverty, working his way out of the slums through working in construction. His help for Jessie and her brother backfires when the money is used for drugs and he dies. Grief-stricken, Jessie blames Silvio, sending him away.

Now three years later, he’s back, saving her from thugs still hounding her for her brother’s debts.

I enjoyed the development of the relationship as we see them reconnect. The feeling they had before her brothers death are still there and it doesn’t take much to bring everything to the surface.

The only thing that annoyed me a little was the heroine’s constant self-denigration. It got a little tired after a while which is why I couldn’t give the book five stars.

The overall story was good, the sizzle was nicely done and the ending satisfying.

Bought: Destitute yet Defiant (Harlequin Presents)This book had an interesting plot idea–that it did not live up to. As a result during and after reading the book I felt very frustrated at the writer and annoyed at the reviewer who gave it five stars.
The two stars I gave the book are for the attempt at writing a refreshing plot and for the hero Silvio–she got him right. But for a romance novel to work the female — Jesse needs to be appealing to–and she did not. It reminded me of that movie in which the cartoon said “I’m really not that bad, they drew me this way”. Jesse (female) was depicted as someone who had no self esteem, thought of herself as nobody, responded in an irritating and silly manner to everything (foolishly)–and in the end I skipped over a lot of pages to avoid reading what she was saying…the writer persuaded us all that Jesse was nobody and wasn’t worth a thing–I believed it and didn’t see her with Silvio as a result. I was indeed persuaded that Jesse should be working washing dishes and should have married a waiter as opposed to Silvio because the writer wrote her that way and did not present anything other than a nice singing voice to persuade us otherwise.
What was missing…we needed to see Jesse as poor and downtrodden BUT as Silvio’s match…. that never happened…to the end of the book I waited but still thought of her as a scrappy foolish woman who would trash her life no matter how many breaks she got. A good plot was wasted and the book left me feeling frustrated and annoyed.
