Soldier/Police officer whose been training off David Kahn’s system for 4 years

I have served in the military for 16 years and law enforcement for eight. I have a background in martial arts and was a combatives instructor for two years. I personally witnessed standard training methods fail one of my buddies. He was taught to simply create distance and use firearms tactics. These methods didn’t provide an adequate response in the heat of an edged weapon attack. Krav Maga is by far the best self-defense system due to its simplistic and practical nature. No other self-defense training is so effective and so simple at the same time. I have many times used elements from Krav Maga to fill gaps in the combatives curriculums I have had to instruct. When I first sought out Krav Maga training I found that there were many local places that seem to just teach ground and pound in there studio and call it Krav Maga. After researching the internet, I found that these local studios were far removed from the actual system itself. After seeking out the backstory on the system I found David’s books and DVDs. Imi Lichtenfeld developed Krav Maga back in the 40s and passed the baton to Grandmaster Haim Gidon. Grandmaster Gidon is currently the highest ranking member of the IKMA. David Kahn was trained by Grandmaster Gidon. The curriculum taught in these books is straight from the source and untainted by pop culture. The great thing about these books and DVDs is that, with five books and four volumes of DVDs, there is way more than enough material to become an effective Kravist. With the right level of motivation and attention to detail you can be ready for any situation. I would recommend at least purchasing a gorilla pad, punching bag or finding a buddy to train with to make things easier. With that said, even without any equipment the techniques remain simple and effective. Your brain will retain what you practice by way of shadow boxing and visualization. The price of self-defense can be outrageous, and you rarely know what you’ve bought until you sign a contract. At $15 to $25 dollars a book you’re not exactly throwing away money and you’ll be totally satisfied. The best thing about it is you can train when you have time. You don’t have to rush to get to class, or, even worse, sign a contract with some dojo you never have time to make it to. I don’t make promises often, but, I promise if you buy the first book in the series you’ll be stunned by the common sense approach to this system. Safe for me to say, before you know it you’ll be buying everything David has to offer.

It works

I have studied various martial arts for years. I was fortunate enough to have had an instructor early on whose primary focus was practical self-defense, in other words, what would actually work in a street fight, mugging, ambush, etc. The techniques in this book are the same I have learned over the years. They are practical, and they work. The thing about this book I was happiest to see was the instructor’s admission that: in a fight, you’re going to get hit/hurt, possibly more than once, and that you must defend yourself to the best of your ability while striving to end the fight as quickly as you can with the appropriate amount of force (you’re not going to immediately gouge the eyes out of some drunk who’s a little overly friendly in a bar, but you may need to if he follows you out and tries to rape you). I also like the fact that he has included reality: it may take several blows from you before your attacker succumbs. Don’t just hit a man once in the throat; hit him as many times as you safely can. Overall a good read, and if you can remember and apply these techniques in a crisis situation you’re ahead of the game, but it still doesn’t take the place of taking a class in a martial art and feeling what it’s like, under controlled conditions, to actually block someone’s strike, grapple with them, punch back, etc. But remember and apply these techniques if necessary, and this book very well could save your life.
