Unintentionally Hysterical
By George R.
This book was a gift and it deserves no stars in terms of fulfilling its promise of being A) insightful, or B) written in English.

However, it is most certainly entertaining. I have yet to find a single page without at least one error, and most far exceed this number. There is a spelling mistake ON THE COVER.

Among the varied delights in store for the unsuspecting reader, are:

• Random capitalisation.
• Sudden and unexplained font changes.
• An almost complete lack of source citing for the ‘facts’ quoted.
• Of the few sources that are cited, at least two are websites that do not exist.
• Bizarre formatting.
• The frequent appearance of small boxes at the end of sentences.
• Images with clear ‘do not steal this image’ watermarks.
• Images stretched to fit the page.
• Images so dark it is impossible to see the feature upon which the author (the word ‘writer’ seems a misnomer) is attempting to base his ‘insights’.
• Stray commas roaming the page like lost sheep.
• Frequently absent full stops.
• Spelling mistakes that don’t even have the benefit of consistency (five instances of the word jewellery in a single paragraph, twice spelled ‘jewellery’ and three times ‘jewelry’).
• Sentences that aren’t sentences.
• Sentences that are grammatically correct but so badly written that their meaning remains impenetrable.

There is also the fact that most of the ‘deductions’ Mr Cardall does manage to explain are completely ludicrous, but by the time one has laughed one’s way through slaying the dragons of obscure wording, terrible punctuation, and truly creative spelling, it seems churlish to object that the princess one was hoping to rescue is actually a troll.

However, having read with interest the above ‘reviews’, object I sadly must. The striking similarity of the majority to the writing style of the author suggest that they have been penned by the man himself, and left by his family and friends. A common practice perhaps, and not one which I would normally call out, were it not for the solitary ‘four star’ review which was presumably written after a selection of the multitudinous errors were pointed out. This review squarely places the blame on the publisher and, while I do feel the publisher’s involvement in this project can only be described as ‘minimal’ (certainly it’s never had the benefit of a proof-reader), for the author to absolve himself of all responsibility is monstrously unfair.

To summarise, I don’t want to discourage anyone from buying this book. Clearly the author is a moron, and an entitled one at that, but I have laughed longer and harder at this book than I have at anything intentionally comedic over the last several years.

If you’re looking for something to use as a teaching aid (‘There are seventeen errors on this page – how many can you find?’), or as the basis for a drinking game when seeking an unusually rapid descent into oblivion, then this is the book for you.

A few extracts are quoted below. These are all (allegedly) complete sentences, with original punctuation, capitalisation, and spelling gloriously in place.

Enjoy.

– Termed as one of the more popular kids just because I spoke how different groups spoke and spoke about what they spoke about.
– You will reap what you sew.
– One thing, you can be sure of, is you will not find a devout Christian male with his ear(s) pierced.
– Reflected in the fact that nails that are kept short, are done for reasons and would make the person aware of them.
– With jewelry being made from metal, though precious, still tough all the same.
– How would someone come to wearing fake jewelry, unknowingly?
– Now I say over 40’s but what I really mean is a group that is a collective of applied statistical research.
– It is representative of excellent vision in all the metaphorical sense, intellectual prowess.
– Typical of women who know they are beautiful and, or at the very least know the power a beautiful women, can have over the pack of men who deem themselves masters of all they purvey.
– A fairly easy one to start if you’re of British Decent.
– Practice, practice, practise!
– The case of the tell tale mud on the boot which has its routes in the legends of Dr. Joeseph Bell, this mud would clue Mr. Holmes in to whereabouts in the city this person had been to or where they had come from.
– If you make yourself aware of where the different locations in your region, which apply to the two different types of settings, either the sparsely located or the industrial setting, then, when you see someone when you are out performing or working a case, who begins their handshake as early as possible and grew up in the same area.

A home run. Could have been a Grand slam!
By The Dragon
This is a 5 star book in a 4 star book’s body. The reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the book’s format, editing and pictures. The book format is poor, it does not have any chapter numbers and title headings. The quality of the pictures is poor, you can barely see the things that the author points out. The book does not have a biboligraphy or index. It does not list any sources or references. The author talks about studies but does not cite any specific ones to support his claims. The book’s editing is poor. There are typos throughout the book. The book is formatted in a block style, which makes it hard to read. At $22.95 the book is also priced high, consider the pictures are poor quality. All of the above publishing flaws, however, I blame on the publisher not the author.

At times, I wanted to give up reading and throw the book down in frustration. But I never did. Why? Simply because the information that the author presents is outstanding. If you want to learn how to deduce people like Sherlock Holmes, then this is one of the best books you could get. The author goes into detail on how to use deduction (or reasoning backwards as he calls it) to draw inferences about people. He talks about body language and eye movement, like other books, but then he goes even further by focusing on specific things.

For example, he has whole chapters on how to read tattoos, eyeglasses, creases, tan lines and many other things. Plus, he gives real life examples on how he did it. The information in this book is what you need to start you on the path to thinking like Sherlock Holmes. The author urges you to practice and use the memory palace technique to store all the unique facts you learn.

Ben Cardall hit a homerun with this book. It could have been a grand slam if only MX Publishing had did its’ job.

Ben Cardall is has just handed you a roadmap to thinking like Sherlock. Welcome to your new obsession.

Have you ever heard of The Deductionist? You have now. In a nutshell, Ben Cardall embodies the closest thing you’ll find to a real life Mr Holmes in his work as not merely a mentalist, but as The Deductionist, and you get an uncanny feeling that he may even be possessed by the spirit of Sherlock. I’ve encountered his work before (check out the web series on YouTube), and when I heard this book was coming out… ye gods. Yes. I *so* want to learn how to do that. Also, my copy is signed 🙂

There is so much information in here. Memory techniques, including the real way to make a Memory Palace. Reading people through their expressions. Body language. This is just the first part of the book… the rest is just as awesome but you need to take your time and absorb. Read it multiple times and get to know the techniques and actually do it. Maybe buy a second copy ‘cos you’ll probably wear out the first one.

It’ll take practice. If you want it, you’ll put that practice in. But this book could teach you to be great 🙂 Your choice.
